The Ugly Unicorn by brightredrose The Ugly Unicorn by brightredrose
There really are no good "tradigital" categories on Deviantart.
Anywhoo, this was for a character quest assignment in my new book illustration class. Had to re-do the "ugly duckling" tale. My first pitch was for a raven and a group of song birds, but this second idea won out by one vote. Raven still made his way in there, though.

The premise for this spread is that Ugly here (who is doing some weird little shimmying amble here because I thought it made him look even more awkward), while shunned by the prettier unicorns, cultivated relationships with all the "normal" animals. Per the teacher's suggestion, I tried mixing flats with detailed graphite.

Input appreciated.

 I adore all the work you've done on this and all your pictures. You web site is really lovely as well.
The tones in this picture are wonderful. If I might ask - did you use photoshop for your colors? And how...

Hey, thanks! I did use photoshop for the colors, basically the same way a comic book artist does. :) I use digital flats to "block in" the colors under the artwork layer. Everything else is just tweaking to make it look natural.

Could you possibly explain what "digital flats" are? I did a search on google, but I still really didn't understand the concept. *sigh*

It's just blocking in areas of solid color with an anti-alias tool, like the pencil tool. You want the ragged, pixel-y border as opposed to the smooth, blurry one.

Love this concept. I always feel a certain connection to the "oddballs" and the shunned and/or loners. I also love how this has references to the unicorn tapestries. (I have replicas of two of them on my wall from a trip to europe) :D
