The Ugly Unicorn by brightredrose The Ugly Unicorn by brightredrose
There really are no good "tradigital" categories on Deviantart.
Anywhoo, this was for a character quest assignment in my new book illustration class. Had to re-do the "ugly duckling" tale. My first pitch was for a raven and a group of song birds, but this second idea won out by one vote. Raven still made his way in there, though.

The premise for this spread is that Ugly here (who is doing some weird little shimmying amble here because I thought it made him look even more awkward), while shunned by the prettier unicorns, cultivated relationships with all the "normal" animals. Per the teacher's suggestion, I tried mixing flats with detailed graphite.

Input appreciated.

 I adore all the work you've done on this and all your pictures. You web site is really lovely as well.
The tones in this picture are wonderful. If I might ask - did you use photoshop for your colors? And how...

Hey, thanks! I did use photoshop for the colors, basically the same way a comic book artist does. :) I use digital flats to "block in" the colors under the artwork layer. Everything else is just tweaking to make it look natural.

Could you possibly explain what "digital flats" are? I did a search on google, but I still really didn't understand the concept. *sigh*

It's just blocking in areas of solid color with an anti-alias tool, like the pencil tool. You want the ragged, pixel-y border as opposed to the smooth, blurry one.

Love this concept. I always feel a certain connection to the "oddballs" and the shunned and/or loners. I also love how this has references to the unicorn tapestries. (I have replicas of two of them on my wall from a trip to europe) :D

Your style is so awesome. It reminds me of a mix between book illustrations from the '20s, and medieval rug art. Really, really pretty. I love the detail in this one.

In terms of what you've drawn here there are really no appropriate categories for traditional. Amazing work! It looks like it came directly from the Unicorn Tapestries (which I'm assuming you're familiar with). I love how every animal is standing/ flying/ observing, etc. in a different pose. Very nice and detailed. I love it.

I think your unicorn looks like the Chinese unicorn. Which is a mixture of several animals just like yours. And where the Chinese unicorn isn't as pretty as the Western unicorns, it's just as equally, if not more, unique! very appropriate, even if that's not what your were going for. I think this piece of artwork is very nice and very beautiful. Great Job! ^-^

Hey, thanks! :) I have looked at a few Qilin pieces of art, so it's very possible that he's got a little Chinese in him. ;) They get even cooler, too--in the Ming Dynasty they look more like dragons crossed with oxen. :D

Awesome! You learn something new everyday! To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about them, but I knew enough to think yours looked like one. X) Keep up the good work, yo!

Splendid. Especially enjoying the textured 'sepia' kind of subdued colors. Almost like a watercolor wash. :)

Certainly! Um, short answer is, way too much time. XD I lost count, but if I have to guess: thumbnailing usually takes about an hour, final sketch is about an hour, maybe two...allow 20 hours for the final graphite, give or take a few hours depending on how long you research your references and how well developed the sketch was (which is why it's good to have a very tight sketch). Then it's only about two or three hours to lay in the color flats. :D Thanks!
